I think calling it great may be a tad bit extreme, but it's a nice example and it would look good in my yard. Most of the tanuki I've seen are pretty obvious, to me this one deserves a closer look.

I think it would look great in your back yard. Mine too for that matter. Perhaps santa claus will bring us one this year. Would you agree that it is in desperate need of a haircut or not?

It could most definitely benefit from a trim. The man who owns this tree is a koi dealer and as far as I know this is the only tree he owns. I doubt he even takes care of it himself.

I suspect that is the case. Too often we assume that all Japanese have a understanding of bonsai, when in actual fact, it is almost as misunderstood in Japan as it is in the west.
