Hi, I offer more of a question than an answer. This tree seems to already have a reasonable trunk..(the picture is a bit dark but it does look OK). Should you not be trying to work with it? Also I thought a Tanuki was done with dead or drift wood as a base and the live material were wips/seedlings or very young trees?

Maybe this shows better, but it still looks like it has a trunk?

My concern using this material for a tanuki is that the tree has already been partially styled and a lot of branches have been removed limiting the possibilities for branch and foliage placement on the driftwood, unless you find our have the appropriate driftwood that wood suie the branches and foliage available . A Juni sapling that has had no alteration done may provide more options and be more versatile. Just a thought.

Jonny.

I would forget about the tanuki and use this tree as is for great little shohin/mame. Matt's close up gave me this idea.
