Hello everyone, I have had this tree Syzygium luehmannii(small leafed lillypilly, North Form,Indigenous to my area)- for a while and thought it would become a nice tree one day.
Here are pics before and after defoliation. And also the red foliage coming up in the next few weeks. Sorry about the photos, I am making a backdrop this weekend. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Happy growing Tai |

Hi Tai - Don't think you wasted your time. Weekends are sometimes a bit slow around the forums. I know nothing about this species, but I'll bet you'll get some response before too long.
Regards! |

Tai, I know nothing about this species. Great ramification. Would be perfect for a winter sillhouette show.

Learning the art of bonsai may be more like water wearing away a stone, or climbing a mountain where the peak is always shrouded in fog and just out of reach. Persist, and someday you may see the peak in sunshine. You may pick up the stone and it's a thing of beauty. MP@BBB Studio |

G'day tai, What a tree this is. Ah well they say all comes to he who waits. Is this a deciduous version? Mine keep their leaves all year. Please keep us up to speed on the transformation. Kind Regards Ash

Hi Mike, Andy, Pill, and ash. Sorry guys it was pretty early in the morning and what's left of my hormones were running rampant...
I've searched everywhere for a decent bonsai version to no avail.. The closest I've come is this one here... http://www.bonsaipalace.net.au/DCP_0294.jpg The description of the species is here but its not for my North form... North form Syzigium luehmannii has a finer branch structure and smaller leaves, But everything else appears identical Syzygium luehmannii - In cultivation 5-10m. In rainforest grows to 30m. Feature tree. Striking tree with foliage reaching ground. New growth deep pink. Flowers, fluffy cream balls so full of nectar they attract honeyeating birds, are followed by red fruits, pear-shaped, Often made into jams and preserves which are also attractive to birds. Likes water but soil needs to be free draining. Will grow anywhere in Australia except where it is very dry or very frosty. Suitable for tubs on verandas or patios but keep indoors only for short periods Ive had quite a few for about 30 years around my farms as topiary but now after defoliation I can see a little more potential in the species... Thanks for the kind responses guys...Its nice to know I'm not wasting my time on them.... They give my wife and I a pretty good feeling just sitting down and watching the sun set through their branches with a nice cup of tea... I will have to bring the rest down for work at home... The defoliation only took the two of us 2 1/2 hours to complete... I must have two weeks solid work with the rest of them. Happy growing guys Tai |
