Big Smile bonsai bargain

hello folks from a new eager uk member, who has become hooked on this most regal activity.

What about this beauty little bargain, an Ulmus with a very interesting trunk for (wait for it ) the princely sum of £6 at my local supermarket, a promo deal
The trunk girth to tree size ratio is very good and the trunk twists back on itself in a complete spiral, nice aye? i am in the process of feeding and pruning to get a nice squat triangle shape...sure beats shopping for boring food!

Tell us what you think?

I think I would be tempted to layer the elm about 1/2 the way up the trunk. This would serve two purposes

1) Give you a nice set of radial roots

2) Turn it into a real informal upright as opposed to the long straight trunk turned "wild thing" appearance, which seems to defy logic.

This is an interesting tree to work with, and well worth the price.

Regards,

Matt

This tree has definite potential, but in its present state, is too top heavy. If it were a real tree at full scale it would topple over and this is the problem with trying to make a credible miniature out of it. Cut the tree in half and get two trees for the price of one, or, if you really like it that way, keep it that way.
