Hi Mike,

I like your tree a lot. When I first saw the thumbnail, I thought it was a shohin, and then I looked at the closeup and saw it was an eleagnus. At that point I really thought you had mastered the art of leaf reduction. I still didn't have any clue the base was some 12" across until I read the details of your post.

It's a very nice trunk and a big one, too. I don't think I would call it a sumo though, because the proportions are almost normal for bonsai. For it to be a sumo, I'd expect it to be at least as wide as it is tall, and possibly wider.

I know you're the authority on sumo, but that is my take. It's an excellent tree in any case.

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt
Thanks for your kind words.
Regarding "sumo": When I wrote an article on sumo bonsai several years ago, it was necessary to establish parameters for the height/circumference ratio. To have a starting point, I picked a 1 to 1.5 height to circumference ratio. This tree falls in that range with the 20 inch height and 32 inch trunk base circumference.

Regards

Mike
