bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Sumo shohin olive

I did a little touchup on my sumo shohin olive today. This little guy measures 6 or so inches around the base and stands about 4 inches tall from the Sara Rayner pot rim.

Beautiful, Mike. That's one favorite of mine among your trees.

Best regards,
Carl

Thanks all, for your kind words.
This olive has been in training for 5-6 years. It was a larger tree, reduced to the current size.
I usually feed it by immersion in water/Miracle-gro solution. at about 1/2 usual dilution.

Mike

Great little olive mike, have you ever tried leaf size reduction on the olives?

Did a little touch up myself with the understaning that 2D is not the best form of evaluation. It just seemed that the branch dead center was out of place and crouded the center view. Not sure what it would do to the 3D image.

Just thinking about the little birdies....

Ozzy.

Leaf reduction on Olives is the same as Ficus in Australia. Complete defoliation in November or December. Depending on your Weather. I feed mine full strength Phostrogen every two weeks. I have found them to be gross feeders. In South Australia you would have the best collecting available in the country. When I was there in 2000 I saw some really beautiful ones but alas our quarantine laws would not allow me to bring them back to W.A. Pup

How do you get Olives to back bud? I have one that has struggled the last two years. I think it was in a pot that was too small. I now have it in a grow box to get healthy again. It appears to be doing very well now. I haven't seen it throw a bud on old wood the whole two years I've had it. Any suggestions?
