Suggestions For The Style Of This Tree.
Hi all, I've been scratching my head over what to do with this olive tree, and would sure like some ideas.
The existing branches are dead, but it is due to sprout from all over the place soon, as olives are want to do. Last edited by treenut : 22-Apr-2003 at 06:19 AM. |

Personally, I don't like that rainbow curve. I'd do something like this if it was mine...
(How I wish it were mine! What a lovely piece of materia!) I've chopped a bit lower, taken off one of the two branches, and of course changed the planting angle. Best, OMC

I find myself agreeing with Old Mister Crow...
If you're gonna chop it, might as well go the whole hog and chop it right back to a sumu. Regards, TB

OMC you must be a formal upright man, you seem to have decided to straighten the whole thing out, I chose this piece for it's curvaciuos body ( must be a male thing ), if I wanted a straight one I could have dug up one of the other fifty boring straight ones surrounding it, I need to work with the curves, and indeed to enhance them as much as possible, I guess I would agree with choumi and others about the trunk chop point but I was even contemplating trying to keep an extra curve even higher up, ( love those curves, must be a male thing ) but that might be getting too tall.
Anyway thanks for your input and I shall update this thread once this little guy takes off. Last edited by treenut : 23-Apr-2003 at 08:53 AM. |

I would go with the first suggestion. You have excellent taper to that point. I have no experience with olives, but if they bud easily on old wood, I'd lose all of the existing branches and start from scratch.

I agree with David - the taper is good to the chop on the first virtual. Besides - you can always chop lower later on depending on where you get buds popping. NOt sure about the "guy thing" - I would just try to keep as much of this tree as possible in the initial styling. I really like Carl's virtual - but it may not work if you are looking for a more informal style. As a shohin fan - I really liked it.

I agree with Lisa - I would chop it on the mark in the picture, although Olives usually bud easily they are slow growers, a lower chopping can be done at any time after budding.
