Styling a Spruce...

Hi, all -

Yep, another "What would you do?" post. I aquired this lil' spruce this weekend. ElGringo has educated me in timing with it, so I won't be doing any styling (save maybe some pinching) until Fall at least. I'd bought it with the intention of making it a bunjin style; I received so much good input on my mugo post, though, that I thought I'd solicit opinions about this tree. Right now, it's about 15" tall, trunk's maybe 3/4" at the base.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

When I talked about repotting previously, it was in reference to combing out and/or pruning the roots, and I apologise for not being more specific. Idowatsu is right, if you feel that it is potbound, you could slip it into a larger pot (without combing or pruning the roots) and place some fresh potting medium around the existing rootball.

However, the roots tend to grow most rapidly before bud burst (which is why they are pruned then -it gives the roots a chance to recover more rapidly than if they were pruned at any other time).

That is not to say the roots have stopped growing altogether at this time of year, but they won't be growing as quickly now. The tree is mostly concentrating it's efforts on growing new foliege.

If you go to the gallery, seach for 'bunjin', 'bunjingi' and 'literati' (several names for the same style). This way you can look at how others have styled their bunjin, to give you ideas for your own.

Thanks, guys. I'll slip pot it up today.
