A Strange Tree

It's been too quiet here lately so I thought I'd share an odd looking tree. This is an Ilex cassine, a native of my area (florida) that I collected a couple of years ago.

I have no idea where to go with this tree other than cutting it back a bit in the spring and working on ramification and leaf reduction. Maybe next year I'll be able to see if it has any potential. It's kind of a fun tree anyway.

It's too bad you've lost the apex, otherwise Post 3 had the start of a sweet shohin.

It looks like now you will need to allow the new apex to grow aggressively until it is a much larger fraction of the trunk diameter in order to create a pleasing, believable taper.

One possibility is something like this. The character of the trunk and branches you develop will define the style.

In summary, I think it really needs 3-5 years of apex development and wound healing, but it could be really great.

BTW, it's a pleasure working with a tree that has an evenly illuminated, uncluttered background. Maybe you could describe how you've accomplished this to provide some encouragement for others?

Regards,

Matt
