Stick in a pot

A "stick in a pot".That's what this ficus was about 10 years ago.And then I put it in a bigger pot.And then a bigger one.For the last 2 or 3 years it has been in a 45 gallon nursery container. This spring it was about 6' tall and bushy.Very bushy.I took 5 airlayers off of it yesterday and today decided it had some potential to begin to commence to start to be a bonsai.

First things first. I had to get the rootball to a managable size.Since the tree was planted in a relatively deep container,I had never had to worry about special soil to provide drainage.I had used regular peat and bark based commercial potting soil. It's cheap and effective for this purpose. As you may have noticed in the previous post;my tool of choice when dealing with large conatiner grown rootballs is a reciprocating saw. It's quick and easy.BUT!!You do have to go back and clean up the rough cuts on larger roots.

I trimmed the sides first and then the bottom.

Next...I washed the soil away from the roots.Trimmed up the cut ends and pondered.I had plenty of options on this one. There were two good fronts.I could have even stood it on its side and used sphagnum moss to engourage the roots to travel down to the soil on the backside.

In the end...I decided on this view as the preferred one.

It still(obviously) has a long way to go before it becomes a bonsai. But at least now it is not just a stick in a pot....it's a BIG stick in a pot.

btw.....any suggestions, virtuals, and criticisms are more than welcomed. They are encouraged.

Nice tree. Here is a quick virt for you:
I would plant it in a brown, unglazed oval
