Hi Walter,
I really like the version that Wolfgang made. I would remove both of the existing jins and make the bottom branch into a new one. I just have MS paint on my laptop so I can't make a decent virtual for you. Great tree as usual ! regards, René |

Walter,
It think this is much better but I still think that the big jin should go. IMHO it doesn't harmonize with the rest of the bear.... regards, René |

Walter,
I've read your post on the IBC gallery concerning the bear. http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/a...last=1058756820 I must say I don't agree. I too wanted to remove the big jin on the right. This is not because I want your tree to look classical. I very much like the work of Kimura. I just think that the big jin is not in harmony with the rest of the tree. It looks out of place. On the trees that Kimura makes there is often lots of fantastic dead wood, but it's always in harmony with the trunk and the foliage. On your bear I think it's not. regards, René |

Taming the bear
I think the big problem facing this material and designs that seek to preserve the deadwood is the two opposing directions that the living apex and prominent deadwood details are pulling the eye. One might be tempted to remove or abbreviate the jin, but it is clearly the "soul" of this tree!
It seems to me that the only way to resolve that conflict is to let the deadwood win: Instead of forcing this tree into an uncomfortable informal upright, why not just "go with the flow" of the deadwood and create a slant style tree? A cascade would certainly be another option, too. First the slant:

or a half-cascade
And as a semi-cascade (here requires laying a new live branch across the a portion of the old deadwood.) Some might call this "tanuki" but I definitely would not. The tree grew this way once, before the limb died out.
Regards, Matt
