Do you know why this is Walter ? It doesn't seem logical to restrict the growing space of a newly collected tree.

Karl's virtuals are getting works of art themselves and this one is no exeption. I'd say go for this.

Renč,

collected trees usually have lost lots of roots. Often it is quite possible to put the rootball into a very small container right away. Why not in a big one where the roots can grow better?
The truth is that the roots don't need a lot of soil to grow. If I stuff the rootball into a smal container there will alwys be enough soil space for the roots to grow for many years.
The roots grow better in a smaller container than in a large one because they get more oxygen, because the soil is warmer, because it can be watered more often, becaue it dries out sooner.

If you water the big container where the rootball only takes one fifth of the soil volume the living roots will take the water from their surrounding only. The rest of the continer will stay wet and cold and make it difficlut for the oxgen to get to the roots. It will take a long time until you can water this container again.
In a small container you can water every day and the roots will use most or all of the availble moisture.

One has to know that one should water as often as possible.
I know this is confusing because the books tell it the other way around.

Walter,

Love the way the pot on that Pinus contorta matches the bark of the tree. Gorgeous, and unusual.

Karl's vitual is excellent, but is it achieveable?

Regards,

Fish.

Walter,

Thanks for explaining. I have several trees in pots that are probably too big. I only water them 2 or 3 times per week. Does this apply for all species ? I know pine roots do not grow very fast, but could this work for a juniper or a yew ? Ik have a few yews that fill up a reasonably large pots with roots in one growing season. Wouldn't a plant like this get rootbound ?
Sorry to keep asking...

Renč,

this does apply mainly to trees which have roots that grow slowly. These are conifers, with the probable exeption of yew.

This seemed practical to me but it's not quite artistic and not as embellished. not sure though, what do you think?

If you followed something like LA's virtual then I would take the big jin and reduce it greatly.

Whatever you decide to do, Keep us updated!
