greggles, maybe a more refined structure and pads? i was thinking this picture would look good. the red arrows indicate wiring the branch downward to create a look of age, the black arrow is to bring that branch, at the level it is at, further towards the back of the tree. just a thought.

Chris,

With all due respect, I think that you've basically shaped Greggles' tree into one of
these...er....creations.

Not necessarily a good thing if it is bonsai that one is after...

Edit: Now I see the link that you've added to Bonsaimon's tree. This is better. Notice that the position of the foliage relative to each branch is very different on your virtual from that on Bonsaimon's tree. On the latter the foliage rests atop each primary branch, giving it a more aged appearance than on your virtual or on the pine from my photograph above. Interesting what a huge difference these sorts of details make, isn't it?

Cheers,
Carl

How is this effect achieved? I've seen many trees like that, with the twigs emerging from the sides of main branches and then bending upwards. Are the twigs trained with wires to go up? Seems like an overwhelming amount of wiring.

Hi Gogo

If you want to achieve a simmilar effect to that seen in the pictures, wiring is a must. With your spruce you may have to rewire the main branches and any secondary and tertiary twigs many times in order to sabilise them in the required position.

Pinching of the new shoots will also be a main occupation on your tree for a few years to come to achive the branch structure for the foliage clouds.

Noone ever said that bonsai is instant or easy.

Have fun and keep us posted

Mike

Hah! It never ceases to amaze me, that someone will want a tree to look like a million bucks, but only want to spend a $1.50's worth of time on it!

Anything worth doing, is worth doing right!

Wire the tree...Al

Hey Mike thanks for the info and the straight forward answer. However, I just wanted to clarify that the spruce isn't my tree, it's Greggles'.

Al, it was not my intent to imply that I am too lazy to put in the dedication and hard work to make a quality bonsai. I've been learning about bonsai for only 3 months now, so obvioulsy I'm very inquisitive about learning as much as I can about methods and techniques. Hence, the simple question I asked. I don't recall saying that I was only interested in putting in only $1.50 worth of work into it. Besides, it's not even my tree.
