Spruce Cascade
This is a very old European spurce (Picea abies). It must be older than 150 years but it is only about one foot long.
The trunk is very much twisted, which is not normal for spruce. It has most elegant curves and cries to become a cascade. However, it canot stand upright and has to lean on the pot. This is incurable. Or is it? |

I drilled a hole into the trunk from underneath to stick a 5 mm copper wire into it. This can then somehow be fixed to the pot and will hold the trunk opright forever.

This all was in August of 2002. I fixed the crown then right away. Afer posting this on the net I got lots of advices. Most wanted to reduce the crown considerably and form a neat trinagle.
I believe that this business about scalene triangles is a trap in neoclassical styling in general and leads to sterotype bonsai. There are no scalene triangles in nature on trees in general. Old trees have rounded tops and if anything then a scalene half-ellipsis is asked for if something like this exists. Anyway, there is one exeption. Spruce do have soemething like a pointed top and do have a somehwat triangular outline even when they are old. I left the crown as is for a year though, because I have killed too many spuce by taking off too much foliage at once. Last edited by Walter_Pall : 25-Aug-2003 at 10:05 AM. |

Walter,
This one is superb! I get this curious surge of emotion when I look it...almost as if it makes me want to cry. Hard to explain, but a good measure of artistic success. So yeah, I really like where you decided to go with it. In a more analytical vein, by removing that bottom-most branch (jinned in Karl's virtual), you've set it up so that the lines of the trunk direct the eye into the foliage beautifully, and flow back out of the foilage in return. No virtual from me this time, because I don't see how to improve upon the current styling. Best regards, Carl
