Spring Deshojo

One of my deshojo maples showing it's lovely spring color.

Needs to be pruned back. Still working on ramification. Possibly some root work too. Just have to find the time.

Love the colour. Very envious as we can't grow them successfully down here. It gets way too hot for them here.

Sorry to hear that David,
Maples are the reason I started bonsai. Perhaps some entrepeneur could rent old warehouse space in a meat packing district to allow for wintering deciduous species. I have heard of such a thing in Florida USA.
A new business perhaps?

It not actually the wintering, we actually get cold enough, it is the hot summers which would murder these trees.

I have an Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum in trainning and Lisbon is definately a zone 10 with Summer temps in the 35șC sometimes rising to 40șC. Larger leaves do dry up and curl but if you keep it in partial shade they do OK. I've met a guy who successfully keeps them in full sun exposure until late May for maximum growth.
Is deshojo a totally diferent animal?

In my experience the Deshojo's are not as hardy as the atropurpureums. If he can do the atro's he can probably do the species acer palmatum's too.

Yeah I have also the atropurpureums which can handle our temps since they are grafted onto palmatums. The Deshojo is very different. It just would not cope.
