Spiral trunk California juniper
I've been doing a little pre-winter maintenance on this juniper. The usual, triming, a little wiring and lime sulfer.
Check the link for pictures of this juniper about 3 years ago. The height from the table is 48 inches. Pot by Sara Rayner. http://www.bonsaitodayonline.com/su.../repotlarge.htm

I have been looking at this one Mike, I think I might have seen it in person in San Mateo? At any rate, I sure wish my C. Junipers did this well, it seems to be thriving! But it is getting a little bushy there. In the thumbnail if you just look at the silhouette of the foliage, it's kind of ball shaped. Maybe it's just the camera angle, but it looks like it could use some definition.
Regards, Matt

Hi Matt
I'm sure you have seen this tree at a Sei Boku show a few years ago. Regarding the foliage, if you saw it in person, it works better in 3d than 2d. Plus, more detail wiring will be done in the spring. All my California junipers grow vigorously. I believe it's the feeding program. My main fertilizer is Growpower 12-8-8 planting tablets that I bury just below the soil surface all year round. Also, I foliar feed occasionally and sprinkle cotton seed meal on the soil surface and water it in thoroughly. All my junipers respond well to this program. Regards Mike

That's a mean looking Juniper there.
In the link you provided the final photo is beautifull. That pot IS great for that tree. Also, the red in the soil is a great compliment to the trunk color and green shade of foliage. When repotting a large tree using that method, do you raise the tree, or lower the table? Last edited by imyerhukleberry : 3-Nov-2004 at 06:14 PM. |

Re. your question, it sorta depends on the situation. Often some of both. For instance, when I want to remove the pot from the roots, I'll take a pick on the tree to get it hanging. Lower the table enough to cut the tie wires at the bottom of the pot. Raise the table up some, and then using the rubber mallet, tap the pot loose. Having both the table and the hoist gives a great deal of flexibility. With this rig, I can handle repotting any size bonsai easily with no help.
