Something Different

This is my first post here on bonsaiTALK. I thought for the sake of discussion and fun, I would throw you a curve .

This jade plant ended up in a bonsai pot about 2 years ago. I moved it into this bigger pot this morning. I find natural growth patterns boring on this species, so it certainly is not your normal styling for this succulent.

So, what do you think?

I like it... Does the view of the #1 branch change much if you were to turn it to a full frontal view? I am just trying to get a better sence of the balance of the tree.

It's a nice big one also. Good job.

Regards,

Thanks. The leaves are not any larger than some ficus at that scale.

Victrinia

Here is a photo from the initial pruning. The primary branch y's right as it leaves the main trunk. The part of the branch that was lower right in the first photo is now in the back.

Hi rjj, I'm not a big fan of Jade as bonsai but your design may have swayed my opinion a little. Very nice IMO. I agree with you, the leaf size appears to fit well with the size of the tree. Nice job.

Hmmm... I guess that's all good (the leaf size), but it is quite easy to make them smaller, and in all honesty, more to scale with the tree (my cockatiel did it for me the first time...!). But it's all in what you are going for. I was thinking to continue the illusion of a BIG tree.

Hmm, looks more like a Crassula than it does Portulacaria afra (Jade).

To be honest, leaf size is not even something I'm concerned with now. After a few more years of branch development, maybe then I'll start pinching off larger leaves and doing a seasonal defoliation. It might not even be necessary by then.

Shibu

As far as I know Crassula ovata is the plant most people think of when the common name Jade is used, even in most books dealing with plants in general. Portulacaria afra is a plant I've always heard the common name "Dwarf Jade".

I guess it's hard to be certain what common names are used from place to place.
