Some Help Needed

I've been working on this procumbens for almost three years now, and the side I'm using for the front (pic #1) is finally showing some ramification in the branch structure.

Just for the heck of it I took a few pics of the back side, and now I'm at a standstill as to what I should use for the front, since I'm liking the back as much as the front. The jin on pic #2 seems to be more bolder looking and draws my eye to it more than pic#1.

Which one would you go for and the reasons why?

You'll probably notice that the back side (pic#2) isn't as refined as the front, and if I decide to with it, I'll need to start working it more, and allowing it to get the majority of sunlight on the display bench.

Pic#3 is what the tree looked like at purchase three years ago.

#74 besides having been refined also has an interesting look to the trunk at the base. I dont know from this picture if that is nebari development or not, but still caught my eye. While #75 has the more pronounced and dramatic jin, it's trunk base almost appears if it has a crossing root, but again I am not sure. I would tend to go with #75 and the more dramatic deadwood, unless that is indeed a crossing root, which would distract me if I were to see it closer or in person.

Hi Thomas,

My immediate reaction was for #75. This is for two reasons. Firstly because the trunk line is not obscured by the branching as it is in the first picture. Secondly, my eye/brain is having difficulty accepting the right to left movement of the tree.

I can see what you mean though, with regard to #74, and is quite a tough call when ignoring the above elements. I do prefer the jin in #74. I've attached the mirror image to #74 and now my brain is accepting it much more willingly.

I'd be interested to see what other people think.

All the best,

Aaron

Be interesting to see what other people think.

I agree with Aaron.
Is a great tree, I wish I had a problem tree like this.

#75 is more dramatic, the trunk is more dynamic and what now becomes a back branch adds depth.

I echo Vance's thoughts and feel that #75 is much more dramatic as well.

Tough call, Thomas.

I think I still like your first choice. I might consider jinning the lowest branch to bring up the "dramatic" a little more. That lower cloud just gets in my way.

What bothers me about Pic #2 is how the crown is totally detached from the tree. It looks like it's floating off in space by itself rather than being a cohesive whole. I'm sure you can bring this together a little better in the long run.

Either way you have a really nice tree working for you. Personel choice on this one. I'd stick with Pic #1 and jin the lower branch.

It looks like most would like to see what I'm now using for the back, as the new front, something I'll probably end up doing in the long run.

Yeah, but don't you think that branch with its foliage is necessary to give a little balance to the top foliage?

Just a lighting problem Jim.

I think the disjointed top is a photo-illusion, it obviously is not just floating there but the photo does not show the branch it is connected to. This is still the best view, though both have possibilities. If I were to show this tree in a judged show it would be view #2/ 75.
