Old Bonsaiman-new pots

I just remembered this post the other day while FINALLY getting all my tropicals out of the house on May 29th.
Probably about 2 weeks later than usual this year. Immediately after finishing the haul out.... frost warning for the night... so.... wife and I moved all of them into the greenhouse for a few more days. I think I'll start doing this as soon as I get hardy plants out in spring as MOST days its pretty nice in there early and completely empty then. At least nicer than under light racks. But , unfortunately those 48 hour days haven't come around yet and spring repotting of hardys and pot making are eating up the first 24 hrs of each day! Anyway, As I took this tree out I cleaned it up a bit, and cut back ,and shortened some more, removed a few branches, and wired it. I think it is starting to shape up although slowly. This year it will get about 4 months outside! Later in summer when hot and humid I'll move it into a better pot. BTW, the larger tree shown in this thread was again shortened seriously. Hopefully I can get a few shots in a few months as it leafs out and is looking more compact and....well...shorter! Dale

Toooooo expensive of a pot!!
I thought I'd bump this thread with a quick picture I took today..
Yesterday I removed the wire on this tree , trimmed back quite a bit again, and rewired a bit. I also reduced the right side of a caloused scar that was effecting taper in the middle of the tree ( you can see it well in earlier photos here). I sealed it with putty. I think it greatly improved the taper look and will heal nicely. I REALLY wanted to get it out of this cheap chinese traing pot. I looked for quite some time in my basement, tea house and shed for a 'not-too-expensive' of a pot ( preferably Chinese) to repot into. Well, everything was an inch too big every dimension...or an inch too small every dimension. Several years ago I bought a bunch of hand-signed hand-made Tokoname pots from the late 80's and 90. They were hard to sell ( guess why??) so I wound up keeping several for my best customer ( Dale) . I kept coming back to this hand-made pot with a $188 price tag ( from several years ago) on it . It was perfect if I got out my shoe horn. So, I bit the bullet and used it on this fairly cheap tree in training. I removed one root on the left to get it in! I'll get one more pic before I put it away in about 6 weeks after it fills out again from my trimming. I think final height is set IMO. I like this shape on this tree and don't think shorter and rounder would improve it. Besides, I have lots nerifolias shaped that way. Also, the larger tree in the thread is looking great! I'll get a pic of it then also. I did a lot of work on it this season. In reading over this thread I had two thoughts: 1. Hows that right main branch looking Zen? 2. I wondered if Jim Stone still felt the same about hurricane waterings!!?? Dale

Watering is good... mowing on the other hand... Still trying to catch up after almost 3 weeks in New Orleans on that oil spill.
Basically have been made a road warrior, my oldest boys are "in charge" of the nursery while I am gone. I used to have a nursery somewhere around here... jim
