well, its kinda where it is now really, dont want to grow it any bigger, just to refine the branching.

Larry this might only be me and i don't mean to be overly critical but surely the point of growing silver birch as bonsai (which is an awckward species to use) is for the bark colouration which this tree is never going to get unless its planted out for at least 5 years! Also whats the style that you are going for?

Cheers Jonny.

Yes that maybe true, but it may get the silver bark later. It doesntr really mater if it does or not.(I have another silver birch that i am growing in the broom style which i would like silver bark on.)
Basically i just wanted an easy growing tree that has smallish leaves suitable for mame, and this one seemed to fit the bill.
The style is more or less as it is at the moment(not sure what you'd call it)
Kinda like one of these.:

Well thats semi cascade but i'm unsure of the comparison, some alteration would be required in the basic shape, and i doubt that a a three inch silver birch will ever go silver especially in pot culture. What is the leaf size like i always find silver birch to be variable to say the least? (p.s.: please dont take me as being negative, just curious!)

Cheers Jonny.

Well, i wouldnt calss that bonsai as a semi cascade, just a mame. Do the styles still apply in very small bonsai?
Also what would you recommend as a pot for mine. Its in a plastic bonsai pot at the moment,(trees4tranquility.com) but i think it could go in something smaller and more in keeping.
As for the leaves, well, when it sprouted after being heavily cut back it went bananas,as SBs are known to, and produced a single HUGE leaf! Things settled down a bit after that and it produced smaller(yet still big ) leaves. Also i need to get more ramification as theres quite long internodal gaps. But this is its first year as a bonsai!

Larry, yes mame does have types of style. I may be wrong, but it appears to me that you are not interested in growing Bonsai. You seem to be interested in growing dwarf trees in a pot. It sounds the same, but believe me it isn't. Just read around here awhile and you will see.

Remember if all you want to do is make yourself happy, do it. It really doesn't matter if you do what is thought of as correct. But...yes but, you will not have what is normally thought of as Bonsai. Bonsai has certain 'rules' (did I really say rules) that need to be followed or at least thought about in growing our trees. Jonny was trying to point this out I believe.

Jay your right that was my point i sometimes just don't articulate my thoughts properly! and Larry as Jay says yes mame still have styles or they would just be little sticks in pots and the example pic is definatley semi-cascade. Although one last critique I would make is that if this bonsai were shown and judged upon in lets say in 5-10 years time, even with ramification and a more definative style, and the judge saw a silver birch without silver bark I think the judge would just keep on walking as would anyone with the knowledge of bonsai, its this species main feature, and because of the problems it presents elsewhere, is the reason it is grown, there are better species for ramifying and that react beter to basic styling.
Lastlly, however as Jay says if it currently makes you happy carry on with it, these are just my opinions in the hope that you will think about my reasoning and potentially make this into a good bonsai that is appropriate for the species.

Cheers Jonny.
