Shortleaf Pine
Here is one of the 16 Shortleaf Pines (P. echinata) I collected from some wasteland used mostly for dumping everything from beer cans to old refrigerators and ATVing about 2 miles form where I live. Don't mean to create a Bonsaitalk scandal, but the truth is I just went and took them without asking anybody. This is one I got last Spring. Pines are more difficult to collect than any other tree in this area. about 80% of what I collect survive and I can't figure out what the reason is that some don't make it. It doesn't seem to matter the age, apparent condition, amount of roots or any other factor I can identify. I guess some just don't want to live in captivity!
Any way, this is what they look like. And remember, this tree is only one year along on a ten year plan! Fred |
