Short Leaf Pines
These are two of the 16 Short Leaf Pines (P. echinata) that I collected in March 2002 and March 2003. They are all growing well in the growboxes I have them in and I am trying to develop their branches by candle pinching and pruning. These trees back bud very well and, once over the initial shock of potting, seem to adapt their root systems to potted life very well. I am finding them very easy to maintain. They live in the same soil mix I grow everything else in and I water them with my garden hose once a day during the Summer, just like everything else. I think they look alot like Japanese Red Pines. I guess they have a long way to go to be Bonsai, but I figure I have another 7 to 8 years before the jury comes in on them.
