shohin Kingsville Boxwood
Here is a photo of a Kingsville boxwood that I recently put on display at the Santa Cruz County Fair. I have recently been experiencing back pain so I have been working on shohin sized trees. This tree was first done in a workshop at the California Shohin Society Seminar about four years ago. The workshop leader was MikeP. These trees are very slow growing. It was designed in the oak tree style and is coming alone nicely. I would like to thank MilkeP for putting on a wonderful workshop. The workshop leaders at the Shohin Seminar donate their time and I certainly do appreciate the great teaching I received from Mike.

Many thanks for your kind words. I well remember those workshops. I had a great time working with enthusiastic participants. Thanks again Mike

Learning the mechanics of bonsai is a matter of rote. Over and over again the processes are practiced until the hands and eyes know the moves. Learning the art of bonsai may be more like water wearing away a stone, or climbing a mountain where the peak is always shrouded in fog and just out of reach. Persist, and someday you may see the peak in sunshine. You may pick up the stone and it's a thing of beauty. MP@BBB Studio |

The tree is very cute, Gareth. You do have the eye for oak style
You ought to put it in the Santa Cruz Kai show next year. I will be attending the Shohin Seminar in 2006. Really looking forward to participating in a workshop and watching the demos. Best, Melissa |

Very cool, a tree that size with that kind of structure is a lot more difficult than some people might acknowledge. Great work

Very nice. I like the movement in the lower trunk, something I have not seen much in Kingsville’s. My only suggestion would be to open up some of the branches, starting with the apex. As I have heard it, I like to imagine the tree with the branches open so that a bird could fly through.

I must give you my compliments on your shonin. If your hand had not been in the picture I would have expected it to me much larger. You have really accomplished the growth of an oak tree well.

Thank you all for your nice comments on my tree. These small trees are a lot of fun to grow. One of my problems is my hands are so big I have a hard time working on the fine details.
