Shohin Hibiscus Rose

Just thought I'd share with you one of my Hisbiscus trees I've been working on for the past year. It's a Hibiscus Rose. It's only about 5 1/2 inches tall. There's a local nursery that carries so many different varieties of hibiscus and I've found several that are great for bonsai. This is one of them. After defoliation, smaller leaves grew in and new flower buds which are close to blooming. The flower is red with a maroon throat. As soon as I get a full flower I'll post again. The center of the trunk is rotted out and could probably be hollowed out.

I forgot to ask if anyone had any tips on hollowing out the deadwood on this tree. If I hollow the rotted wood should I apply lime sulfur or just wound sealant and allow it to heal over itself?

Vines are very soft inside. Plants like wisteria, bougainvillea, lantana and I suspect, your hibiscus have rather soft wood inside.

I would use a wood hardener like Minwax wood hardener. I think there is a link in bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques->Deadwood

Regards,

Matt

Finally, a flower! This is the first time I've ever had a flower on a tree exactly where I want it.
I know the flower is much larger and is not in proportion to the tree but I'm happy.

I love it. It is very whimsical with the large flower. Do you happen to remember the name of the cultivar?
