Shohin Ficus Salicifolia '89

This tree was taken as a cutting two years ago by Jim VanLandingham. It came into my hands about a year ago. I immediatly moved it into a shohin pot. The shohin pot kept the tree from growing at a reasonable speed. So yesterday, I slip potted it into a larger pot to allow it to grow. I also wired all of the branches into place. The right side is lacking quite a few branches, but I cut the others back hard enough to get plenty of backbuds.

where the heck do you get all of these fat trees I can't find a single tree with a trunk thicker than 3 cm, but yours are monsters, and they have lots of potential aswell.Looks nice, want to see it in leaf

oh yeah, i forgot, you might want to consider removing the middle left branch. It seems too crowded

Charles:

I am interested in your choice of the JS '89 for shohin, as it's noted for its relatively large leaves.

How tall do you expect your final tree to be?

Some of the trees of one of Charles' mentors can be seen here .

Charles is very fortunate to have two great teachers.

I congratulate him for having earned their interest and support.

Bart,
There are two ways to prevent too large of leaves during an exhibit:
1. defoliate the tree and display it bare of leaves. This would require very tight ramification.
2. defoliate the tree a couple of weeks before the exhibit so that the new foliage has not completely matured causing them to be much smaller.

The final height of the tree will be more or less the height that you see right now. I believe that is about 4 to 5 inches.

Jim VanLandingham went through a shohin craze during the past two years and took hundreds of shohin cuttings. Now, he is trying to downsize his collection, so he has given me many of his potensai.

The branching may appear crowded, but once you remove one of the two branches, there is too much negative space.

So, you live with the large leaves the rest of the time.

With our main show in early April, it's too early to do a complete defoliation, even with a greenhouse. I may try an extensive partial defoliation, lke I did this March to get the same result. (Once the new leaves are coming in, I can then remove rest of the large old leaves safely

Ask him please NOT to give them all away now! I'll be there in 6 weeks!

BTW, looks like I can't be there, Wed. July 28th. It will have to be Mon, Tues, or Thursday.

If you come on Thursday, I should be there in the afternoon from 2:30 until 5:00. Jim VanLandingham has been driving up to Melbourne on Wednesdays to see his new grandson, so I have been coming over on Thursdays lately.
