Shimpaku Pre-bonsai

Hi. I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone has any advice/virtuals for this shimpaku juniper.

(I was thinking about Moyogi style similar to the tree pictured at the top of page 173 in Bonsai Techniques II by John Naka...for those of you who have the book handy)

Thanks.............

hi ya

its very hard to see in these pictures but it looks like the tree might have a reverse taper, is it narrower at the soil line that at the lowest branch? If so that can be hard to correct. Look for trees with taper up the trunk line, especially with junipers.

next, thin out the top of the tree so light and air can get to those bottom branches, they look like they are getting a bit long. you may need to pinch the new growth of the ends to try to get it to throw buds back closer to the trunk.

It has a nice curve in the trunk line. you need to keep the branches coming from the outsides of these curves and not from the insides, but i really cant see the branching all that will in this pic.

Give it a chance to grow, maybe try a grow box when the season is right to repot it. If that is a reverse taper, id try throwing it in the garden and come back to it in a few years. Mean time, get another juniper!!

But if you really want to train and pot this one, feed and pinch and feed and pinch and feed and ....yep, you get the idea

It is not a reverse taper, I don't know why the picture makes it look like that.

I'm planning on potting it in a larger pot for training.

Thanks for the input....
