Shimpaku - Before And After

Here's a shimpaku that I picked up at a bonsai nursery last March for $65. As soon as I got home I got right to work. I immediately saw the potential in this one at the nursery when I eyeballed the trunk. It just needed to be tilted to about a 45deg. angle as you will see in the next pic.

As I said, the initial styling was done immediately after purchase. I let it fill in real hard throughout the summer and finally did some clean up work on it today. This one really loves the water.

Thomas, that must be the best instant bonsai I've seen.
I wish I had even one tree like that, you've got tens of them.

Keep on doing what you're doing.

redirect crown

Thomas_J; man am I laffing at my self. I did a vertual on adding a guy wire to redirect the crown and after finishing realised who I was talking to. Better that we should listen to how you plan to direct this tree than for us to make suggestions. I will be interested to hear how you intend to finish this tree.

Nice find Thomas.

I've found that one of the problems with finding good hefty shimpaku stock is that unless they are trained early to a single trunk, most of them are multistemed. Looks like someone left that nice jin on the right side just for you.
It ought to be a fun tree as the years go by.

Nice nice material Thomas. What are your plans for the apex? I would reduce it rather than try and wire it back straight above the pot. What are your plans overall?

Wink Suggestion

Hi Thomas,
A wonderful Juniperus. Perhaps one could take the beautifully curved trunk to the validity better. One should reduce of the green a little and in any case use a more beautiful shell.
They forgive if I see the Juniperus so.

To all of you that commented on the apex; your right on. This is the biggest flaw in this tree in that the main trunk goes up at a 45deg. angle rather than straight up. My first intention was to cut the apex down a bit and develop a new leader with a branch from the back side. Instead I just let it ride through the summer to let it green up and see what kind of growth I could get out of it.
Something will definetely need to be done with it though. I'll probably try wiring it first to see how much I can bend it.
Glenn,
Whenever you feel you have an idea for something I post, bring it on. I'll listen to whatever anyone has to say. Someone might see something I may never see, and in so doing might help me quite a bit.
Karl,
Thanks for the virtual. It's certainly something for me to consider.
Thanks to all for all the nice comments.

Hi Thomas, very nice piece of wood. I love the trunk, and would probably just do some fine wiring and prune the canopy back to get the apex back over the trunk. The natural lines of the plant are easy to follow. Just remove everything left of the line.
