shari first time
Here is my first attempt at a shari it would have been up months ago but i couldnt finish due to the skin being alot softer than the wood when it comes to a dremmel and carving wood, ive just been allowed to use power tools again. Tell me what you think if you like im really open to suggestion.

thats excellent. i guess you could paint it with some ink (after lime-sulpher) to really bring out the contours

Gidday mtngoat,
Nice one so far sport, will keep my eye on your tree, to see how it developes. I've also done my first two sharis, nothing any where near as grand as yours, as to surface treatment, I have been advised to go for a more natural appearance and to use a good coating of vaseline, well rubbed in until all is soaked thru. The colour of the exposed wood, unlike yours, has turned a deep golden ochre, my two trees are a Podocarpus and a Premna japonica, both slender literatii. I do it slowly by hand with a variety of chisels, the use of a machine has no interest to me, sorta not so much control, and definitely far slower. I'm thinking that your tree is a Ligustrum of sorts....? Best of luck with it mate, oxxerbon

Looks like a great effort so far. I've done very little of this but can appreciate the effort that goes into it as I've started a few with my dremel and observed many others done.
I'm not familiar with this tree species and it's habits. Some straight lines in your efforts I'd guess you'll soften with irregularities or perhaps smoother/straighter curves is more natural on that species. I'm more used to seeing shari/jin on evergreens in the PNW which are typically quite irregular and 'masculine', perhaps your species etc is just more feminine? |

Vaseline on the other hand appears to be more realistic, and responds to time, specially colouration and texture is what I'm concerned with, Lime sulphur jumps right out at ya, and dominates the eye's perception. ie., very distracting.

ozzer cheers man does it protect the wood a tad from rot like the lime also cause if thats the case i might give that a go.
Gillmore just some info if you wanted it. Ligustrum sinense (privet) http://www.weedsbluemountains.org.a..._small-leaf.asp its basically a weed to most but this opens the doors to cattle naturally pruning them constantly thus giving me and others a bonsai'd tree ready to dig up. |
