Sei Boku Bonsai Kai at Filoli

Annually,as part of the Mothers Day celebration, Sei Boku Bonsai Kai of San Mateo, CA displays bonsai at Filoli Center, a National Trust property in Woodside, CA. Learn more about Filoli by clicking the link.
http://www.filoli.org/

There were many excellent bonsai supplied by members, but the Needle Juniper I'm showing here is very exceptional. It was imported quite a few years ago (when it was still legal), and once was shown at Kokufu-ten.

To give an idea of the size of this bonsai. the background is 44 inches tall.

This image is an olive in the Filoli exhibit that had the distinction of appearing in the WBFF world contest for 2005. It has since been repotted in a fine Shigaraki pot supplied by me. The owner of the tree and I have an agreement. The pot is her inheritance and the tree is mine. Not often you find a bonsai strong enough to inhabit a pot such as this one.

This image is a Redwood collected, planted, and maintained on the rock by Tim Kong, our resident Redwood master. If you know Redwoods, you can appreciate the task of keeping it alive and thriving on this relatively small rock.

Those are amazing I love the Sabamiki olive. Split trunk trees are so haunting.

Mike,

Excellent looking redwood on a rock, this must really be a challenge. If you can, please share the secret of maintaining a redwood well watered on a rock!

Do you keep it with minimum folliage?
Water several times a day?
Keep the rock in a water tray for days?
Mist leaves and soil?
Is there a secret to the type of soil that would keep a redwood happy?

Thanks

onlyrey, I can't do a very good job with your questions. but the next time I see Tim, I'll ask. I do know that he keeps it in a shallow container with water to maintain the moisture level. Probably keeps it well shaded and wind protected also.
