Thanks Reed. But just to be clear, my preference is for a somewhat less formal crown than the one in Arnie's virtual.

Mr. Brian,

I think you have made some good decisions for this difficult stock...I have never worked with scotts pine, however, since they are so popular for christmas trees I would assume they can be forced to back bud...I have made a virtual of what I would be trying to achieve with the tree...This would not be a short term project, but you should have a few years to have fun with this idea if you choose...I would lay it down much more to minimize the visual lack of taper and straightness of the trunk...A nice crescent pot would allow the roots to be planted up the side of the pot somewhat to accommodate this...With a large shari and working the foliage to where it partially conceals the trunk, I think you could have a very nice christmas tree in a few years...

Regards
Behr

Wow, great virtual g. Thanks. I have no idea if a Scotts pine will take a shari all the way down the trunk without croaking. I think you all have now explored virtually (pun) all of the options with the material, from a straight-up planting angle (Ash), to almost horizontal (grampz).

I have a Scotts Pine I'm experimenting with, but find that back budding has not been all that prolific.

I like everyones virts...such an inspiration to strive for...

Here's an update on this one incorporating Walter Pall's suggestions, with initial carving. The previous front is now the back. This allowed more significant carving to be done without endangering the live branch. I'll continue working on the carving, and wire the branches again after it gets a rest for a bit.

Great work, loking good for the future.
Yes you can make a shari on a scots pine, but it needs to be healty, and you have to go step by step!
Scots pines are known for there backbudding, they react very well to pinching and cuting, when this is done on the right time.

Hans van Meer.
