Zube....

Thanks for that information Z... I don't know about you, but we're in our little two week freeze stretch we usually get mid winter. So everything is pretty frozen outside right now. I'll protect it until it passes. But thank you so much for the book recommendations and the info about the temps!!

I am going to see what color the blooms are before making a final choice about the pot. But what I know is that I do not want it to continue into 09 in a unglazed pot.

Warmest regards,

Victrinia

Actually he'll be the first to tell you he liked it none at all when he saw it last year. But I saw it and was over the moon about it... so he got it for me.

Many thanks my friend...

We try hard to have a balance of "project" trees, and fairly advanced stock. Out of our bunch this one ranks as one of the more refined trees that are "mine".

And honestly, it was such a good deal that to NOT buy it would mean being angry at myself for like yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaarrrrrrrsssssssssss....lol

Warmest regards,

I promise..... X my heart.

I'm hoping the white pot will work for the tree also. In fact I'm just hoping beyond all hope that it is a purple variety. Only so that I can bring it over to my Mom when it's blooming and have her be over the moon about it herself.

But even if it's a standard pink... I'll love it just the same.

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

And yah.... Bob's a keeper. The whole gift giving thing this year was a fabulous giving of bonsai and bonsai things to each other, that both of us love having. Did you give Hottie any bonsai gifts?

Thomas...

Texas is tricky... either your trees are thrilled to be there, or you have to fight tooth and nail to make them that way. Frankly, I still can't get over the humidity and the shear racket from the bugs that you have to live with...lol Lets not EVEN talk about fireants... GRRRRRRRRRR..........

It's kind of like with Daniel, he has this enormous collection of trees, with a great many species and almost every kind of pine I can think of..... except white pines. He has ONE.... and it's been let to run wild the whole time he has owned it. It's a nice old collected one. And it's the only one which has never died on him. I'll probably take it on as a project tree for this year. Because he's hesitant to touch it, and if I start in on it, he'll suck it up and take a chance with me on it. lol He knows his limitations. He'll tell you right off the bat, it's white pines.

Folks like you and Daniel know they can't grow EVERYTHING.... but what you do.... you do marvelously.

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

My dearest Pup,

What a lovely way to describe the movement of this tree. I'll hold that in my heart when I am working with it, and keep the spirit of it alive within her.

Diane (Daniel's wife) also explained to me that the low long branch is grown that way to make sure it gets enough light, to keep the branch strong. She talked about the staggered layers were to make sure good light gets throughout the whole tree.

But I like Dancing Geisha better... it satisfies my romantic notions.

Give my best to Mrs. Pup as always... and the pooches too.

Yours most kindly,

Victrinia

Greetings Barbara...

I am glad you enjoyed that photo. I always like to take photos of a tree's ramification. And as is my habit to appreciate a tree from every angle I was laying on the stairs looking up at the tree from it's underside, and I was equally thrilled to see the view of that branch. I have some fabulous ramificiation shots of other trees. I'll dig them up and share them with you. You'll enjoy it. Plus... what better lesson to learn about HOW one should achieve such a thing, than by studying other examples.

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

Just one question: Is the 1st branch on the left needed? Without this branch, the tree may have a dynamic equilibrium and impulse feeling.

I love flowering and fruiting bonsai, however, in my area, I didn't have any luck with azalea at all!. Have a nice weekend. Bonhe

Bohne...

I pondered it for a while after I read your question. What is lost in a photograph is the true size of a tree. Especially when it is a well done mature tree. The tree is very impressive in it's size. If you took off the left branch, it would indeed introduce a noticiable dynamic. But with the way the trunk connects to the soil at its current angle, to remove it could make the tree appear ready to tip out of it's pot. Now if the trunk entered the soil from the opposite curve, it would have the effect of making the tree appear anchored and stable. But as it sits, I think that left adds stability to the image.

What do you think of that idea?

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

Hey Ms. Vic. Flowering satsuki aren't generally considered bonsai as such, although there are many similarities. Contrary to traditional bonsai practices, probably more than half of satsuki are displayed in unglazed containers. I believe it depends on the flower color. Plants with very bright blooms are very often potted in unglazed containers. More muted flowers (very light pink or pinkish-white) can be put in a glazed container (often dark blue).
All the best,
zube
