Satsuki Azalea
Thought I would share my Christmas present from Ang3l with you all. If it seems a little late, I'll confess I only just had time to be able to go pick it up. And believe me the mild temps it enjoyed at Bonsai Northwest, did it no harm. The foliage is nothing short of lush, except for the very furthest tip of the long first branch.
I included an undershot of the long first branch, just for the sake of showing the beautiful structure of it. Mind you this is the most Japanese looking tree I have. I'll alter it's appearance to some degree, after it flowers this year. Mostly with the use of guy wires, as azaleas are as brittle as can be. As lovely as it's formality of structure is... I can't get over the need to create a more natural feel in the tree. What I know about the tree is fairly limited. I know it was one of the last Japanese Satsuki's that the Muth's imported. It was in the collection of a local club member for several years, and it was recently made available through consignment at BNW. It's 21" tall from the pot lip, 32" across, has a 3" trunk, and is in a 16" lotus pot. Daniel has an off-white crackle glaze lotus pot that is a little shallower than this one, I will probably repot it into that one and trade him for this deeper pot. I'll have to take a pic and get Ang3l to virt the tree into it. It should be a pleasant surprise to find out what colors the blossoms will be... no one seems to know. And the gentleman who sold it through the shop is not available to ask. So we'll find out together. This tree is setting buds all over it already. I have to keep it very protected at this point. It was in an unheated greenhouse up until now. So for the moment it is going to stay in a unheated sunroom. I'll have a really nice shed to move it into next week. I love this tree dearly, it's so nice to finally have it with me. Now I just have to manage to not panic/fuss over it. Any thoughts.... suggestions..... advice.... is very deeply appreciated. Warmest regards to all, Victrinia |

Hi Victrinia, I love this Azalea. The white pot should go well with this tree. Can't wait till it blooms You will have to post some pictures of it in bloom and in it's new pot.

Looks like a really nice tree here in the making. I've never had much luck with azaleas, couldn't keep them good looking all the time. For me it was too fine a line as to how much water to give or not give. Anyway good luck with her and hope you enjoy the blooms whatever color they are.

G,day Ms Vic.
Very nice I am not into Satsuki. I do have a friend who specialises in them. He has imported a few from Japan. When he talks about them he gets quite passionate. He has explained the style that yours is as a Dancing Geisha it is grown to show of the flowers to there best. As you can see long low branch then a series of S's. I wish you well with it and would like to see it flower. We will have to wait till May though!!. Regards Pup

I really like the third picture of the underside of the branch. It shows such amazing structure and ramification detail. I would love to have a tree with hearty structure like that. In time, in time. Great gift.

Hi Victrinia,
Wow, you have a great gift! The tree looks very beautiful. Just one question: Is the 1st branch on the left needed? Without this branch, the tree may have a dynamic equilibrium and impulse feeling. I love flowering and fruiting bonsai, however, in my area, I didn't have any luck with azalea at all!. Have a nice weekend. Bonhe |

Very nice, Ms. Vic!! It would be interesting to know the variety, but you might never find out. Personally, I wouldn't pick a new pot until I had seen the flowers. Two books you might be interested in are the 'Satsuki Azaleas' from Stone Lantern, and 'Floral Treasures of Japan' by Kennedy. I wouldn't think the tree should need much protection. I don't worry about mine until the temps drop into the mid '20's.
Take care, zube
