Darrell, whatever way you go with this bonsai, stay with it, and it may reward you. The link is to a San Jose juniper that I worked with for about 10 years or so, starting with nursery stock.

Thanks all for the input and virts.

I had considered something along the lines that Andy shows, and I do like the "story" of a tree continuing to fight to grow to the left (into the wind?). I believe the roots even support this story, as the are larger on the left, as if clinging to the ground, while the ones on the right go deeper, to support the trunk.

I guess time will tell which way I end up going, for now I'm just going to let it recuperate.

I don't know if this is possible, or how long it'd take, but in my credulity it seems possible. The blue would be composed of branches heretofore unseen. That is, you'd have to hope you get those branches (ie: I created them, they're not there.) Still it could happen.

The pot was just something I thought worked. It'll probably be several years 'til you even consider potting it up, much less reducing the roots to the size required for this pot.

Just the ramblings, and a virt, of someone trying to "find the tree,"

Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd post a quick followup on this tree. As you can see, it has really taken off with growth this spring. I need to get it pinched/pruned back, and start detail wiring.

Very nice Darrell. I am glad to see it growing with such vigor.
Gosh, I'm so new to this and such a novice novice, that I can't even comment on your progress. You were very brave, but I admire the decisiveness. If I were to do what you did, not doubt it would be labeled as impatient and thoughtless.

One thing I have learned from this thread is that I can no longer work with reckless abandon and that I have to visualize what I want in a tree instead of just going, well let's see what we've got in here... snip snip, oops, oh, hope that grows back...

this is my new philosophy...

Spend some time drawing the trunkline of the tree. Add some shapes of canopies that look pleasing on the trunk. See if the branch structure is such that the branches present can support the canopy wanted. After being satisfied on paper, then one might rough style to suit said design. Working with random abandon, to "see what I get" may ruin an otherwise great piece of material for years while waiting for branches to catch up to what was pruned off inadvertantly. Al Keppler

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd post an update on my progress with this tree. Walter Pall was in Portland, OR for a workshop yesterday, and this was one of the trees I worked on. Before and after pictures.

I popped in on the workshop for a few minutes, and Darrell was abou half-way done with this juniper. I must say, that this tree is much more impressive in real life than it is in the pictures. The trunk has great movement, and it is difficult to tell but it also has a feeling of stability. I hadn't seen the apex before this picture, but I like what was done with it, and I am sure it doesn't look as angular/has more depth, than is shown in the pictures. Great tree that will only get better!
