bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

San Jose Juniper

This juniper, like the one in my "Horsehead Rock" post, also came from old nursery stock and has been in training about 10 years. The pot is Shigaraki. Height from table is about 23 inches.

Quite an intereting tree Mike!

Please no offense (I'm a 1 yr rookie at this), but I was very keen on it, clicked the thumbnail and then was distracted by a few items. I like the upper foliage/reminiscent of white pine style IMO. I struggled to see a completeness to the jin's and trunk shape-treatments, how it all ties together overall. I could be missing it all but I found these distracting leaving me unable to sense the flow or story as to how it became what it is? Perhaps if the jin's were combined more so with additional trunk carving to provide more flow it would tie together better for me?

My very rookie .02c

Interesting tree, Mike. Beautifully photographed, beautifully carved. In general the lines and relation between foliage mass and trunk remind me of Maria Kapra's contest entry in many ways.

Best regards,
Carl

Now i like it. The raw animalistic placement of the jins serve to please me very much. I love the barbed and twisted apearence, although the jins do appear rather bright white. Maybe it is just the dark background?

This work on this tree reminds me of another I just recently seen... Same workshop maybe? Same photographer?

Will, this tree has never been in a workshop. Strictly my work, and my photography. I don't know anything about the other image you showed.

No offense intended, just hard to over look how closely these two trees resemble each other in many ways, remarkable. Maybe you're both students of Boon? Even you must admit the similarities.

Will, no offense taken. I'm a friend of Boon, and have known him since he joined Bonsai Society of San Francisco, as a relative newbie to bonsai.
I'm not a student of anyone in particular. Just a student. I've also been a teacher, but not so much anymore. I'm happy to help anyone who asks however.

Great bonsai, Mike. I like it, I was struck only by the simularities between the two trees and did not mean to imply anything negative towards you or your work. I can reconize your experience in this work, good job.

The other bonsai was a contest entry and the first tree styled by that artist according to their entry post.

With respect,

Will
