San Jose Juniper

This san jose juniper was purchased for it's nice taper and lots of usable branches. It was pruned back in Sept 2001 and then sat on the pre bonsai bench until March 2002 when it was wired (2nd photo). I didn't take a photo before first pruning, but it was a bush about 3' (~1 meter) across. It's in a mica training pot. Dimensions 9.5" H x 14" W, 2.5" base diameter at soil. (24cm x 35cm, 6.4cm). Comments and virtuals are welcome and appreciated.

This Juniper is astonishing! THe only thing I would do is to expose the trunk a little more by removing that cluster of foliage covering the trunk which is coming from the lower left branch.

Re: San Jose Juniper

Juniper with a rootbase is a rare treat!

I agree that the foliage cloud right there obstructs the view of this interesting trunk area.

Nice juniper, I too agree the foliage has to go.

Hi David, Thats a very nice piece of wood you got there! With a couple of years growth, this will be a dandy. The root flare is very nice. I have a virtual for you. It's not the best work I've done, but you get the idea. Evren with virtuaL software, making branches in the shape that looks appealing is very hard. Just think how hard it is on the real tree. I really like this pot too. Best regards, Bonsaial

Re: San Jose Juniper

David,

Sweet piece of material there!

Al's virtual is cool - but for this particular tree I actually really like the current low rounded contour - not something that you see so often on junipers. At least not on big ones with a nice rootbase! It's almost a deciduous form, but it works here, and definitely singles the tree out as something other than a cookie-cutter San Jose Juniper!

Cheers,
Old Mister
