The pot is terrific. The scroll is nice. The accent is beautiful. The combination, as has been said, doesn't work.

I think there are a couple of reasons. I'm not a reliable source on this, as I have very very little understanding of display. These are just some things I've noticed in other Keido and display works.

You might go here for a pretty intersting discussion on an American learning keido with bonsai from Japanese masters:

http://internetbonsaiclub.org/simpl...d,4196/catid,9/

From what I've seen, a scroll used with a bonsai in a formal display shouldn't have another tree in it. It's redundant. You're saying something twice, or contradicting yourself, as the case may be. In this case, with the ume accent plant (I think that's what it is) you're saying almost the same thing three times. Roughly, scrolls should provide an environment--emotional or even a landscape, cloudscape, etc.--to the display. The accent should play into that blend. If you're saying "spring" here with a budding maple, a scroll that obliquely references spring (like a swallow in the sky, a spring moon, etc.) along with early flowering accent plants like snowdrop, could work.

Al-

I have never attempted a three point display but I have followed with keen interest the discussions that have occasionally been on this forum. Because of this banter, I also have a goal to understand and perhaps try my hand at three point display.

You have courage to show your first attempt here. The group discussion that has followed has made some excellent points, furthering the art of three point display to members of this forum.

One point that I may add about your display: Square the bonsai stand and accent display to the camera. (I look at some of my earlier photos, not three point display, just bonsai, and this had been a problem for me in the past and now I am more attune to this detail). It is a small detail but it is the attention to small details that make this an art.

Thank-you for starting this post. I have learned from this thread.

Honestly everything seems to run together, like each piece of the display is trying to be center stage in the photo. You need to give them their space. I'm no expert at all...so take my opinion as you should...

Like the others have said, great job on tree, pot, etc.
Good first try, you've more boldness than myself!

In addition to Candy's advice about squaring off the stands, I would advise hanging the scroll vertically. It may just be camera angle making it look skew-whiff though

Looks like the top of the tree stand is bowed upwards, but if you made the stand then I'm sure it doesn't so this is most likely a camera effect.

Agreed that the scroll picture is too similar to the tree in movement.

Not sure if the accent should be the same species as the tree as in the scroll? can someone who knows help me out here.

To put all of the abovecomments in perspective, I have never assembled a 3-point display myself. I am trying to learn though, so thank you Al for exercising my little grey cells.

Regards,

Chris.
