Thumbs up rosemary with lots of deadwood...tell me what you think

hello everybody!

this is a tree i had to dig up recently because it was getting in the neighbor's way. this is one of about 5 or so big rosemarys that are about 5-6 years old. most of the lower and inner branches on these rosamarys died, so i had to clip them, but i managed to save the thick deadwood to work with.

i know rosemarys don't like their feet tickled, so i was as careful as possible, but i spaded the roots last year because i knew i would have to dig it up sometime this year. or next.. i just didn't expect to have to do it this soon.

i have no idea as far as style, but it's clear that this one has lots of potential, especially in deadwood trunks that are attached to the live one.

the nebari is excellent, though it's not that clear from the pics. i decided not to go too far down because when it was in the ground, some of the leaves were turning yellow (i assume from being too dry... it didn't get watered and it was very dusty and dry when i dug it). i thought the health would be compromised but it seems to be doing o.k. since i dug it. maybe in a year or two i will reveal more of the nebari below this soil, because it's really thick and interesting.

i've heard that rosemary is extremely difficult to train with wire, and is best suited for the 'clip-and-grow' method, but i think that i could possibly wire some branches the way i want them if i start when the branch is still fleshy and green. any experienced folks have any ideas on this?

any thoughts as far as styling? any kind of virtual welcome... tell me what you think.

Are you sure those branches are dead? They may start to grow shoots from them so just wait a bit.
Rosemary can be wired on young branches, thin woody ones as well as green branches.
Pinch the tips to promote back budding. They do back bud nicely.
Put a tablespoon of Epsom salts on the soil every couple of months. Magnesium Sulphate, they love it, it makes them bloom too.

Good luck, nice tree,...Hec

Cool

Magneisium sulphate! heh heh who remembers chemistry lessons in school? Mg is important for chlorophyll, sulphur is used in many proteins, especially those that detoxify metals in cells.

# 49037......

I think that older branches are brittle, so are hard to style. Nevertheless, the way its growing, i reckon that has the makings of a funkinagashi/windswept style, just looking at how the deadwood is pointing, and the foliage could be arranged accordingly once the tree settles for a couple of seasons. You are officially made a member of the 'suburban yamadori' club, a nice tree! Or herb. You have a bonsai herb.
