Rock planting Cotoneaster - advice needed for show

The yearly bonsai club show is coming up and this year I was planning to take my Rock planted cotoneasters. I recently purchased the large tray it's displayed in and added the second rock. The small rock has immature seedlinds and these will be replaced when I've grown the right trees to put in there.

I'd like some advice on how to improve this planting:
- how the trees can be improved
- the rock surface
- the position of the 2nd rock in relation to the 1st
- accent plantings on the rock(s)
- where's the front?...
etc etc etc

The tree was rotated clockwise 1/4 turn with every photo.

Although it can't be seen, the tray is generally filled with water.

Here are close ups of the largest tree and of the 2nd rock.

I think #23196 has the most visual interest.

Book

Hi Jeremy, Sorry but this is largely an undefinable mass not a good subject to have photographed and expect to receive accurate advice. If i were faced with the raw material (go to #23193) The right hand rock is fine, the one on the left i would have planted dwarf pines or junipers higher up with grasses/ferns below. A darker coloured suiban would then be my choice. I hope you don't think i am too harsh but it is my belief that the island rocks would have more diversity of flora than just one species. If there is another species there i cannot define it. My Kind Regards Ash

Follow-up

I spent a couple of days before the show searching for some tiny accent plants in order to increase the "diversity". I went around the local botanical gardens and (with permission) found some tiny ferns, miniature purple and green shamrock growing between the paths. These looked just great when added to the rock.

It won the 1st prize for a "Landscape planting". No prize, just glory.

Jerry

Thumbs up Diversity

Jerry i am delighted for your recognition of the landscape at the show. I reflect on my one eyed choice re. junipers or pines. Of course one species as cotoneaster is fine but your choice of accent underplantings was wise. That is why i think this union of minds at bonsaiTalk makes it work. It is a win win for all. My very best regards Ash
