new trident

Today I have received this trident stump as trade-in for some minor collected trees that I did not want to keep.
Looks pretty raw. How about improving the crown and maybe the pot?

have fun

Re: new trident

Hi Walter,

Your tree has good "bones!" I think it just needs a lot of development of branches and branches on Branches.

For my virtual,

Placement of the first 3 branches will be key, but then it will be a lot of refinement to develop a halo of branches. In my picture here, I think I was not careful enough about branch placement, but was just looking for a pleasing silhouette that creates the feeling of a twiggy tree.

For a pot, I chose a glazed lotus shaped container that will show off the fall color, and some nice green moss.

Re: new trident

Walter....If this tree can progress to the point of your virtual, what is your estimate of how long it would take to do so? I think that the answer will give me an idea of a time line.....I know patience patience patience

Re: new trident

Jay,
first of all, it is quite possible. I have done it before. It took me 5 years to get a decent crown and 10 years to get what is called "masterpiece" in the upcoming issue of "International Bonsai".
Here is some development of the branch sturcture as forseen by Christine Hayward-Schmalenberg.
patience and constant care!

Re: new trident

Walter...keeping on the same thought. It appears that obtaining a tree with trunk and base development is the most important item. Time will develop branch ramification quicker than trunk growth. Nebari (is that the correct term for root to trunk transition) is even harder to develop. I write the above as facts when actually I am looking for confirmation!

So if all above is true. If adding to ones collection look for the base?

Thanks for the lesson Jay

Re: new trident

another virtual showing a possible future branch structure.
This virtual was made by copying the branches of another trident maple. Here one sees the shortcomings of this method when the color of object and background as well as sharpness of the two pictures are quite different.
It is better to copy from one and the saem picture.
