That tree looks absolutely great ! I'm still amazed by the amount of roots that is removed on trees like that. I've seen it done in the magazines too. I don't think I would dare to do that. Not with such a wonderful tree.
thanks for showing. Very educational ! regards, René |

The work done on the tree is essential you will find, but all the same, daunting the first time you do it. That is a annual job without fail to keep nice new roots around the nebari. For anyone who hasn't tried that rootpruning on their own maples should! The earlier the better. It helps to increase the nebari by sending all the growth outward around the base rather than down under the tree. There are many Bonsai Today articles on the subject to find.

Barry and David,
Would you do this kind of rootpruning on other species besides maples ? For instance, would a boxwood survive this ? And how about evergreens like a yew ?? I'm often told that I'm to careful... René |

I have never grown Boxwood or Yew so I can't comment on them. However I practice this rootpruning on all my trees. Perhaps not as hard as that on my Corky Bark Elms, Junipers and Figs. I have always been taught to remove as much as possible from under the nebari encouraging "outer" root growth to help flare base.

A beautiful trident. I'd say go for it too. Get as many as you can while AU has that 6 month policy...you never know.

The good thing is it is only a 3 month wait and the Australian Govt Quarantine Horticulture team do a fantastic job looking after them. The bad thing is the AU$ is poor against The YEN and Greenback so the costs are high. That tree could be as high as 150,000 Yen today. Put on top of that a week searching them out in Japan. A lot of $AU!

If you can schedule your trip to coincide with one of the Fall sales at the Tokyo Green Club in Ueno Park (there are several each year, the one around Thanksgiving is usually the most timely), you can find a couple growers iwth dozens of field grown maples for sale, among many other varieties.
That's a good way to maximize your time, so you can get poor in a matter of hours. Regards, Matt

Unfortunately I have a wedding to pay for in the near future and a trip to Japan is out of the question. Unless I pull off a lotto win.
Thanks Barry for correcting me on the 6 month quarantine thing. Just gotta get the dough ready!!!! |

Barry,
I have to state the bleeding obvious. WOW! Tridents are one of my favorite landscape and bonsai tree species and yours is one of the most amazing trees I have seen! You could sell tickets to your next repot I'm sure. Of course you would have to blindfold all guests beforehand, for security reasons! Are you planning on showing the tree at the show in October? Hope so. J (still shaking) |
