Repotting Of A Trident

Last weekend I visited a bonsai friend of mine who was repotting his prized trident maple brought over from Japan probably 5 years ago now. It's getting close to late winter here in Melbourne and repotting should be done from now until bud burst.

Here is a look at the repotting of this lovely trident.

First the tree out of the pot with all of the root growth for the last year. Excellent and very healthy roots and tree.

Sorry about the background in the previous photo.

Here is a great picture of the bottom of the tree after root pruning. The Japanese sure know how to get right into the base of the tree. No heavy roots or roots from directly underneath the trunk. Beautiful fine roots all around.

And finally into its pot. Because of the huge base of this tree this pot is the only one able to fit the tree in without being an oversized pot.

That's a FANTASTIC tree. If Crow doesn't like this one, there is no hope...

Regards,

Matt

A wonderful tree. It looks a lot like some of the maples I saw in a recent issue of International bonsai magazine. They might have used the same technuiqe in japan to grow it.

Matt, you should see it in person. Importing these kind of tridents into Australia from Japan is what I want to do. Tridents easily survive the 6 months of quarantine they have to go through. Very hardy in Australia. This tree is root pruned every year and it always fills the pot fully with roots.

Jump on it while you can. Importing bonsai into the US from Japan is basically illegal now. Legal, but subject to two years of greenhouse pre-entry quarantine, which no grower would bother with when they can simply sell them in Europe or Australasia.

Regards,

Matt
