bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Redwood Update

Here's some pics on the progress on my coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), purchased from Blue Oak Nursery this spring. First pic, as purchased. Second pic is today. Starting to get some taper established at the top.

As always, I appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

Thanks
Brian

Wow and wow.

Are you working on jin on the sides there, or did the tree just catch fire

I'm wondering, with the multi-trunk thing going on, if you might consider a more penjing-like approach where one tree can be used to represent many trees on a hill, similar to some of the things in Robert Steven's recent book?

Very nice material.

I would just go with a triple or double trunk, and no jinning of the smaller trees.

The jin and charred top of the small trees are supposed to suggest lightning damage and not fire damage (fire would normally burn part of the lower trunk and lower branches). In this case the jins don't make sense since the taller tree is the one to be hit by lightning.

So, it seems more natural to me to leave the tops of the smaller trees green.

Regards,
Attila

Thanks, I've been debating with myself about whether to lose the jins on the smaller trees. Attila your reasoning makes perfect sense. Now it looks more like this.

Update after fall repotting. I think this one is far enough along to go into a half-decent pot. After looking at the pic, I think I may not have the potting angle right yet....top leans to the right.
