A Raft, A Shohin, And A Few Others

Here's a trident maple raft that I've been playing with since 1998.
The thing started in a nursery pot which was about 3in. by 3in. I put it in a deep pot and let grow to about 5ft. in height. Wish I would've let it get a little taller, so I would've ended up with a little more thickness on the trunks. It needs a lot more ramification on the branches also, which will come in due time.

This shohin is a zelkova serratta which I opted not to do in the classical broom style. Wouldn't have been able to do it that style anyway since the trunk is not straight as for a typical broom. Actually I had to start over on this one this year because it was pretty damaged by the hail storm and my unprotected from the sun display benches last year. forgot to mention that shes somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.5 to 4in. in height

Here's a chinese import of a crape myrtle. I've had this one also since 1998 and never had a flower on it until last Sept. Hope it blooms really good this year also.

This is my tall trident. I liked the pot for it when it was bare leafed, but I'm not too crazy about it in this photo. I had it last year in a shallow Sarah Rayner pot, but it didn't work out too well with the Tx. heat.

These trees are awesome! I can see why you are a featured artist on BonsaiTalk! I especially love the Trident raft and the Crepe Mrytle! I can see what patience, a good eye and skilled pruning and wiring can lead to ... Thanks for sharing! How's things in Texas, are your hail screens working out? The raft style is something I aspire to try someday. The movement in the Zelcova trunk is a twist on the usual broom for this species!

T,
Your foilage always looks so clean and green. Tell us bout your fetilizing regime --and do you defoliate?

Thanks again for the kind words. As for the hail screens, I really haven't had to use them yet this year. I'm not getting hardly any rain this year as compared to other places in Tx. Last week right outside of College Station which is about 125mi from me they got 15in. of rain in a few hours, and I got enough to fill a half a glass probably. I need the rain but sure don't need the hail. Rainy season is just about over here in Tx. until next fall.

Bonsainut,
I usually use organic fertizlizer most of the time, basically fish emulsion and another product made by Espoma called Hollytone and Gardentone, both very good organic products which contain micronutrients which most organics don't. I also use chelated iron about once a month especially on the junipers. This year the tridents and other big leafed trees are looking pretty good because of the shade cloth I put up this year. Hope it works this good in dead of summer. As for defoliating, no I don't. The new leaves would burn for sure in this Tx. heat.

Good luck on your trident. Post a pic sometime.
