quince sick?

I bought this quince online and It has had this whitish trunk for a while. Some of the leaves look sick and the new bud growth seems to die off instantly. A lot of the leaves just fall off. The new growth on the other side of the plant seem to be semi-healthy. There were some aphids eating on my plant for a while but I used some spray to kill them. I havn't seen them in 2 months. I was wondering if it was hard water or maybe something worse.

Where does it live, indoors or out? What amount of sun does it get?

Quinces never look 'great' in the middle of summer, but there may be something going on.

It usually lives outdoors under my poarch which means it gets direct morning sunlight till about noon then none after that. But I have taken it indoors for about 1 week because I thought it looked a little sad.

And you thought that bringing it inside would make it look happy? Put it back outside and stop messing with it's emotions. lol

Put it back outside and keep an eye on it. The foliage looks good, actually, although it's hard to tell from photos. What did you use on it for the aphids?

I used some bug killer for gardens. I think it burned some leaves but it killed those stupid aphids. I was reading some stuff about fungus that could kill a tree if it got to the trunk. You don't think its that, do you?

Just a little motto about aphids... nothing survives squishing. Next time try removing them from the new growth with a Q-tip and squash the little devils. Or, make up the water/soap/alcohol spray (search for the recipe) and spray them. Either of those options won't hurt your quince.

You have your quince in well draining soil. The leaves don't look bad, although it's hard to tell from photos. You say that the new growth dies off... that could be just the heat. Or lack of moisture in the soil. Or a hot wind? More aphids? The white on the trunk doesn't show up well in the pictures, it's hard to know what's going on. Can you clean it up with a damp toothbrush? If you do, does it grow back? Do you let the soil dry out slightly before watering?

Quince do drop their old leaves this time of year. Mine do it constantly. They are sort of dormant right now, here, during the peak of our summer. We call it 'summer dormancy', it's a pause before the fall growth.

Try cleaning off the white stuff with a damp old toothbrush, and make sure that the quince gets a little dry before watering again. Morning sun and afternoon shade is probably all right... but it would be better to have afternoon dappled sun/shade.

Did you repot it when you received it?

My inclination would be to leave it alone and see how it goes. If it's weak, drenching it with another chemical bath.. a fungicide... might not be your best bet. Just be diligent about watering it and keep watching it. Maybe someone more knowledgable will come on and give different advice?

...and keep the tree outdoors year round, and in as much sun as possible during the growing season in your location. Generally speaking, more sun=more flowers. Dave

Thank you all for your advice! I will try the toothbrush technique and I will also throw it back outside. I did not repot when I got it because the seller said she just repoted. The white stuff on the trunk doesn't really grow, its just there so I have no Idea what it is.
