Quince

Here's a quince I worked on in a workshop in San Francisco a couple years ago and would love some suggestions and/or virtuals. I was very dissapointed in the furnished trees but learned alot about wiring. I just repotted it a few weeks ago as it was starting to bud and it was still in its plastic 5 gal. pot, so I know the pot and red rock is atrocious but the rock helps hold the moisture in our dry climate.

Do you think there is anything I can do with it?

Re: Quince

I just looked at this picture on my work computer and it's terrible! Is that why I'm not getting any response? Let me know and I'll try a better picture. I would love some comments on the tree.

Re: Quince

Hi Earl,

This material just isn't very good for its size. Quince is really twiggy and what you have here was grown quickly in the field for a few years and then lifted and grown a bit more. All the interest is on the ends, but it can't compete with the long, cylindrical trunk.

On top of that, you've a radical bend at the base and complementary bend at the apex that just draws attention to the long, boring trunk.

If it were mine, I would make two air layers and three trees from it. The top most is a very small, twiggy tree. The middle one could have the most potential in the short term. The bottom tree is ready to go back into the ground, but I think it could also be quite good down the road.

Good material for workshops is quite hard to come by in any quantity. I think you can learn quite a bit from this tree and develops some very nice trees from it, but it as a whole, it will never be a quality bonsai with this trunk.

Regards,

Matt

2 air layerings

[i:122d3e74bd]Matt[/i:122d3e74bd],
To use your plan & do 2 layerings, can you do them both at them same time or do you have to do 1, finish it, then the other? Just curious technique wise-thanx.

Re: Quince

You should be able to do both layers at the same time on most trees. I would not try two parallel layerings on a pine though, unless they were different branches.

Regards,

Matt

Look at that little bugger go!!

BTW, My wife actually got a kick out of something on a talk forum. She said you have talent. She ought to know she's in the music buisiness. We just got back from her big music convention, and your song would hold its own with the hacks in Hollywood. A

Re: Quince

Thanks, Matt, that's exactly what I needed. I have not tried air layering so this would be a good tree to learn on, as it's not much good the way it is. I'm assuming right now would be a good time to tackle it as it is just starting to leaf out so the tree should be gowing vigorously.

Also, I loved the visuals and appreciate the time that must have taken!
