Question on display height

I have a little F. retusa I have been working on for about a year.Last night I got the bonsai bug and searched this little guy out.I knew it was somewhere on my bench, but everything is sort of disorganised at the moment. Finally I found it behind and below a much larger tree.Working in semi darkness,I didn't want to do too much but I did trim it up some and noticed some things about it that I am dissappointed in.

The following are some pictures of the development of this tree.I welcome any and all comments, criticisms and suggestions for the future path to take. The first two pictures were taken in june and then july of '06.The third is as it was sitting on my bench after being pretty much neglected for 6 months.

thanks for letting me share,

andy

The next 2 pictures are from different viewing angles after a quick trim job and hastely applying one guy wire.As i said...I would appreciate ANY comments...but the thought that crossed my mind and led to my quandary is this.......

In a bonsai show....if the tables are approximately 3' tall, people would be looking down at a tree of this size.(even if on a small stand). This is the view in the first pic in this series. If the tree was elevated or if the tables were higher..let's say 5'..then the viewing angle would be much different.

I like the looks of this tree when viewed from slightly above, but the rear, right subtrunk is distracting to me when viewed at soil level. In addition, the canopy shape is more attractive in the first angle.

What would you do?

thanks,

andy

Mr. Andy,

Firstly, this is a nice little tree, although that is not surprising belonging to you...As always, it is difficult to tell from a photo, but the trunk that crosses from center to left is the one that I find rather distracting...I realize the importance of the trunk to the canopy on the left, and in a few years it should 'melt' into the main trunk mass very well...

Our club has 'riser' legs for our display tables...These are sections of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe cut square on one end and about a 45 degree angle on the other end...They are about 18 inches long, we slip the table legs into them with the angle cut at the top, which keeps them all at the same height on the table...This in effect raises our display tables near eye level for the center height of most large and medium size trees...We also have 'shelves' that raise trees to about 1 foot above table top level for smaller trees...I realize this will not put the trees at the same viewing level for both of us, but it does allow most people to view the trees at or near the proper perspective...

Personally, I make an effort to work all my trees in a manner which will be best when viewed from near the center of the tree height...I also try to photograph my trees, and the trees of others from about this same height...I must admit I much dislike seeing photos of trees that are taken from a high angle, although we see this practice all too often...I always look at the photo and wonder what the tree really looks like when properly photographed, and it seems to me to be such an injustice to the artist...

Regards
Behr
