Pyracantha in development

I'm posting photos of a few more of my trees in development, in the hopes of opinions, criticism, or whatever. Thanks very much in advance for your help, as always.

I bought this Pyracantha from a local general nursery last Fall. Since I'm useless at virts, I've included a rough sketch of my idea for this one. That strange blob in the middle of the trunk was intended to show where a back branch should be; please forgive my lack of drawing skill.

In the photo, that strange scraggly branch heading diagonally upward and off to the left is the back branch; I'm waiting for it to bud closer to the trunk and to build up a little more girth near the trunk before I prune it back, hopefully in the Spring. Total height, if I remember correctly, is 3-4 inches now, going to 4-5 inches on the eventual finished tree.

I love the new growth on your plant. It's vigorous and placement is good. What is the diameter of the trunk?

Thanks, Barry, I appreciate the kind comments. You think I'm heading in a decent direction with this? I suppose it's hard for you to judge, since I always, always forget to take a "before" photo until after I have made the first alterations. If I may sound wildly ambitious for a moment, this is one of my smaller trees that I am hoping I might be able to show in two years, when my local society will be hosting a shohin convention in St. Louis. If I do some good work between now and then, I may be able to sneak it in, in a throw-one-of-these-kids-from-the-local-society-a-bone sort of way.

The trunk is around 1 1/4" in diameter measured from the broadest point of that flare in the trunk (or thick root, however you want to think of it) that spreads to the left. Slightly under an inch, if you measure above that flare/root.

If I may resurrect this, I've been trying to think about a pot for this one, although it probably won't be ready for one until 2009, I'm thinking. I'm very much drawing a blank. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A couple of pots I purchased from the Chikugo-en nursery in Los Angeles...any opinions at all? For some perspective, the first pot will be slightly wider than the tree, whereas the second probably would be slightly less wide than the overall branch spread. It could be argued that the second pot is just a bit too deep, perhaps. I think I'm on the right track, at least.

The potter for the green pot on the right is "Yozan". Tokoname region for the kiln.

Cheers, Al

I personally would go for a rounded, maybe an oval one for a softer look.

I'm impressed, Al, although there's nothing new about that.

Whether the pot works for this tree or not, I thought it was gorgeous, so I had to buy it to fit it to something eventually.

And thank you, Sasori, I certainly will look for an oval or two, as well. Any difference in color that you might recommend? I probably should mention that this is a red-berry variety of Pyracantha.
