Procumbens Juniper

This procumbens juniper (9.5"H x 11" W, trunk 1.25" diameter) was purchased as rough nursery stock eight months ago. It was pruned, the deadwood carved, branches wired and and then left to grow. One month ago, it was wired again and put into it's first pot (photo taken right after potting). Since then, it has been pushing buds well and appears to have recovered from all the stress of wiring and potting. Down the road, I'm considering reducing the overall mass of the foliage (number of branches). Also the jin and shari will be refined in the fall, when the tree is fully recovered. Any suggestions for further refinements?

Re: Procumbens Juniper

Very beautiful tree. I love the style, and you have placed the branches just right. I would not change a thing for at least a season, just to see how it ramifies. The only thing I would do is, detail wire all the fine tertiary branches. get all those loose ends into the canopy. Just a small thing, but I think the tree would really sparkle.
Best regards, Bonsaial

Dave,
Yeah I agree nice work. That is alot to do to a tree in one year. Let it grow now. Don't neglect summer pinching but just the tips no deeper. Pinch all foliage growing down and under pads. Watch wire daily after new flush of spring growth.
Judging from your work you know this routine, just repeating for any body lurking around!

Re: Procumbens Juniper

Thanks for the compliments and advice. I've been doing bonsai for only two years (mainly junipers), so I still have a lot to learn, especially on the growing end of things. I'm just now getting a handle on the timing and severity of pinching, so hopefully I can do justice to this tree's potential. Thanks again.

Re: Procumbens Juniper

This is the other side of the same tree. I think either could be a possible front. Any opinions?

Re: Procumbens Juniper

David,
I agree with Bonsainut. Let it grow for a year and see what what it looks like come Autumn. Since you did the initial shaping last July it needs some time to grow. If it were my tree I wouldn't even pinch it much this growing season. As far as a front, I like the 1st one the best as far as movement but the second photo shows the shari on the trunk better. Give it time and you'll make a wise desision. I have trees sitting aroung that I've been contemplating for years. Every year they look different.

BTW, Nice tree!

Re: Procumbens Juniper

Seems to be filling out nicely down there in Zone 8. My junipers haven't even started to put out new foliage up here in Wisconsin.
thanks for the progress report.

Re: Procumbens Juniper

I agree with everybody...a very nice tree and doubly nice in that you have been doing bonsai for only two years. You've got the knack!
