Re: Procumbens Cascade

David, that is a fine tree. It'sh hard to believe it came from nursery stock because it is so craggy and old looking. I would swear it is was a collected tree.

Is the pot homemade? I really like it also. I may use it for a model and make one myself, if you don't mind.

The only idea I would have, and it is a very tentative one, is I might change the jin on top a little. The tree flows to the right and and front and my eyes follow it that way but when I look at the jin it is going to the left and it is little jaring. What I learned in Naka's book (I always have to quote others because my own knowledge is to inadequate!) is that generally you generally think of a jinned branch just like a real branch. A real branch on a tree cascading over a rock would probably have been blown by the winds the same direction as the main branch. But that is a very minor, minor comment.

It's a great tree and pot.

Re: Procumbens Cascade

Earl,

The pot is an inexpensive Korean pot, but the size and shape are good for this tree. The craggy look is from all of the beginner abuse it's been subjected to. The jin will probably disappear. I don't think it adds that much to the tree, but I'll leave it for a while and decide later. Thanks for the comments.

David

Re: Procumbens Cascade

That's a really neat tree. If you're a beginner, I'd say you have the touch. I think it's fine just as it is. Put some lime sulfur on the jin, (first wet the jin with water and then paint the lime sulfur onto it...it'll look yellow at first, but tomorrow morning it'll be fairly white) and that will preserve the jin. It hardens the wood and prevents rot. There are other products you can use too.....like wood hardeners, but most people have lime sulfur to use as a dormant spray in the spring..
The pot is appropriate for your tree. I'd say if you like it as it is, just let it.....and as it matures, you'll like it even more. As the foliage fills in, pinch it to keep it looking like horizontal clouds. Don't let the foliage clusters gather and become big masses.
Again, congrats on a good tree.
