Pot Suggestions

This is a small procumbens that's one year in development from five gallon nursery stock. I'll be repotting it this spring. Any pot suggestions? Critiques and virtuals are welcomed.

David

Hi David,

pot suggestion:
Here is my pot suggestion for your excellent little juniper. I was looking for a drum pot with rivets, but I saw this and thought it would suit better.

critique & virtuals:
I wouldn't know how to improve it. Perhaps just refining the foliage, but that is going to happen anyway with time.

BTW your recent posts have given me a lot of inspiration for my own bonsai. Thanks.

Regards,

TB

TB,

Thanks for the input. I was thinking that something shallower and with more curves to accent the trunkline and spreading foliage might be better. What do you think of this pot?

Very nice pot, but it might look better potted higher. (I've also swivelled the pot, to bring 2 feet to the front).
My own personal preference is still for the deeper chunky pot, but I can see why you are thinking of a curvier pot.

Regards,

TB

Treebeard,

I like the second one where you changed the legs. Beautiful tree.

Walter you may be playing around but that pot is perfect for this tree. Exactly what I would put it in if it were mine.

Walter, The change in planted angle, tightening up the foliage and the right pot make the image of this tree much bigger and more mature looking. Now I'll try to approximate what you have shown. Thank you for playing.

TB, Thanks also for the input, but I think we have been shown the light.

David

Walter's "playing around" illustrates how subtle things contribute greatly to the final image. Often I see a fine tree and think "how obvious". But is it really? Pot selection, planted angle, potted height of root ball, a bit of moss, a subtle change of front....all of these and more add up to the sum total. Then there are the aspects of proper display, or making photos that represent what we see sitting on the bench. What appears simple suddenly turns very complex.

Like most other learning efforts, I find that creating bonsai consists of a series of "AH HA!" moments when a light turns on in my head and a concept that I've read a dozen times becomes clearer. Even though these moments are few and far between, they keep the juices flowing and make me hungry for another, because every revelation opens a door to new questions. The depth of knowledge and intuition required to make truly fine bonsai is immense, but if it was easy, the goal wouldn't be as alluring.

What's the point of this? I guess it's just a way to reason why bonsai has affected me to the extent that it has, and to say how valuable this (and the IBC forum) has been to stimulating the brain about how and why we do bonsai.

Thanks Again,

David
